Daily News

By Marisa Hoge, PR and marketing director, The Daily

Curious about what’s going on at The Daily these days?

Our editor-in-chief, Sarah Jeglum, runs our editorial department, handling all of the material that is published. Sarah is passionate about utilizing The Daily as the student voice on campus. Each section of editorial is also run by student editors who work with student writers to generate various stories for a features, arts and entertainment, sports, and opinion sections.

The Daily is not only delivering news to the community, but is also creating a forum for students, staff, and faculty to exchange their ideas and thoughts with one another. Every Friday a section in our paper is dedicated to “Free Speech Friday” where non-Daily employees are encouraged to utilize the space and write about what they would like to share with their student body. Also, on our Web site, students, staff, faculty and visitors are allowed to comment on our news stories.

On May 28, The Daily will collaborate with the Associated Students of the University of Washington for the first annual First Amendment and Free Food Festival. This event will entail a test to our student body on how well they know their First Amendment rights. Various food vendors from the community will donate items to pose a free lunch to students. The catch is that if the students would like to take advantage of the free lunch they must sign a waiver that takes away their First Amendment rights.

"This event is a good opportunity to foster a stronger connection between The Daily, students and faculty campus-wide," says Bon Kelly, development and advertising director for The Daily. "We are interested to find out what the UW community knows about the First Amendment and how much they value and appreciate their rights given to them under the First Amendment."

The goal with this event is to spark discussion and illustrate how valuable the First Amendment rights are as well as how easily they are taken for granted.

Guests are welcomed to participate or watch the event on Thursday, May 28, from 12-3 p.m. on the lawn in front of the Husky Union Building. Admission is free, and if anyone would like more information you can contact our marketing department at (206) 616-3124. Prior to the event, The Daily staff is conducting an online survey of First Amendment knowledge. We will also attempt a first ever, live web cast of the event.

Also in spring quarter, The Daily will partner with the Chi Psi fraternity for our annual "Stuff the Bus" charity food drive. UW buses will receive cash and food donations at four local grocery stores. Last year’s event brought in almost $20,000 worth of food and cash gifts for Food Lifeline, the Western Washington affiliate of Feeding America. The Daily’s Bon Kelly chose Food Lifeline at the suggestion of Communication alumnus (and Hall of Fame member) Peter Clarke, '58, the co-founder of From the Wholesaler to the Hungry.

The Daily is always open and welcome to any visitors on weekdays in room 144 of the Communications Building on the Seattle campus.

Check our Web site for more information on the First Amendment and Free Food Festival and other events.
