GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The University of Washington Health Sciences Libraries (HSL) seeks an innovative librarian with excellent communication skills to join the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region team in its mission to promote access to health information—and the effective use of this information—in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. This individual will coordinate a regional network of libraries, agencies, and organizations that provide quality health information to clients. Duties will also include training in use of computer systems that connect people to the health information they need, and provision of technical support for system users as well as working with the other Regional Libraries in the Network and the National Network of Libraries of Medicine staff headquartered at the National Library of Medicine. NN/LM PNR is funded by a contract from the National Library of Medicine.

Under the general direction of the Associate Director, NN/LM PNR:

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Coordinate use of the DOCLINE interlibrary loan system in the Pacific Northwest Region, including development of training and training materials, provision of training both in-person and from a distance, provision of consultation and technical support to DOCLINE libraries, and formulation and modification of document delivery policies.
  2. Coordinate the network membership program, including maintaining directory and contact information, developing collaborations between network members, researching strengths and needs of network members (and potential network members), fostering communication across the network, provision of information regarding membership privileges and responsibilities, and contributing to development of explanatory and publicity material to spread knowledge about the network.
  3. Provide training and support for use of electronic document delivery, including identification of appropriate technology for different library situations.
  4. Develop and maintain working knowledge of evaluation, selection, and implementation of electronic resources, including licensing issues, group purchasing options, interlibrary loan and document delivery considerations, and other issues relevant to the health information environment, in order to provide consultation and support for libraries and other network members in the region.
  5. Provide informational support to the region on open access topics and serve as an advocate for public access to publications resulting from publicly-funded research.
  6. Coordinate use of the PubMed LinkOut for Libraries program in the NN/LM PNR, including development of training and training materials, provision of training, and provision of consultation to LinkOut libraries.
  7. Serve as a member of the NN/LM PNR Web Group, including participation in evaluation, design, and content development for the regional NN/LM PNR Web site (http://nnlm.gov/pnr/) and the national NN/LM Web site (http://nnlm.gov).

General Responsibilities:

  1. Promote the use of health information through demonstrations, instructional sessions, and exhibits of relevant electronic resources, particularly NLM products and services.
  2. Develop training materials for specific audiences/subjects to aid in developing knowledge and skills in the effective and appropriate use of health information.
  3. Provide user support to regional network members and others as needed.
  4. Refer health professionals and the public to network member libraries for library service.
  5. Assist with NLM online system development and testing.
  6. Promote development and use of the Internet for health applications by advising on use, providing training, and publicizing.
  7. Participate as a team member in the other activities of the RML that lead toward improved health information access, use, and literacy in the region.
  8. Work with other RML staff to carry out the planning, coordination, instruction, research, and writing functions of the NN/LM PNR.
  9. Perform other related duties as needed.

QUALFICATIONS:

Required:

  1. Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information science degree.
  2. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  3. Strong teaching skills.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative and collegial team environment.
  5. Demonstrated experience with new and emerging technologies and applications for information access and management.
  6. Basic understanding of document delivery, electronic resource management, and other information access topics.
  7. Familiarity with Web site content creation and organization.

DESIRABLE:

  1. Work experience in a health science library setting.
  2. Knowledge of current trends in document delivery, interlibrary loan, and/or electronic resource management.
  3. Familiarity with health information literacy and/or social marketing topics and techniques.
  4. Experience in program planning and priority setting.
  5. Understanding of National Library of Medicine systems and services, and of other major sources of health information.
SALARY:

$38,000 minimum. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and background.

BENEFITS:

Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF, The Vanguard Group, and/or Fidelity Investments) on a matching basis. Vacation is accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year. No state or local income tax.
