GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The University of Washington Health Sciences Libraries (HSL) seeks an innovative, user-oriented and technically proficient individual to provide leadership and vision to a team of talented experts committed to utilizing technology to deliver information at the point of need to faculty, staff and students in the health and biosciences. The HSL serves over 20,000 individuals, including: top-ranked Schools of Medicine, Public Health and Community Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Social Work; a top-rated public university biosciences research program; and two large academic medical centers and their affiliated neighborhood clinics. A nationally recognized regional educational program offers training sites throughout Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WWAMI).

The HSL is composed of the Health Sciences Library and Information Center, the Social Work Library and the K.K. Sherwood Library at Harborview Medical Center, and is a part of the University Libraries. The HSL is known nationally and internationally for its innovative information management research. The HSL serves as the headquarters for the Pacific Northwest Region, National Network of Libraries of Medicine. This position reports to the Director, Health Sciences Libraries, who is also an Associate Dean, University Libraries. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

As leader of the HSL systems team, this position is responsible for strategic direction, administration and management of UW HSL computer resources, systems and networking including:

  1. Serves as a member of the leadership team for the HSL.


  2. Plans, develops, implements, integrates and supports computing resources, systems and networking


  3. Manages and supervises three FTE senior computer specialists and two to three FTE students


  4. Leads evaluation and management of the Health Sciences Learning Commons composed of four computer classrooms as well as a large walk-in computer laboratory (http://healthlinks.washington.edu/hsl/commons/)


  5. Leads strategic direction, evaluation and management of digital services including the extensive health sciences web portal, HealthLinks (http://healthlinks.washington.edu)


  6. Collaborates with Health Sciences faculty and Medical Centers clinicians, and others in planning and delivering digital information and educational resources


  7. Leads and contributes to HSL research and development projects

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree


  2. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace


  3. Strong communication skills and customer service orientation


  4. Minimum of three years of experience in systems and networking operations in a complex environment including Unix and Windows servers.


  5. Excellent analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills


  6. Project management experience


  7. Ability to identify important trends and developments in IT of significance for the library and lead the development of responsive systems and programs


  8. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary teams


  9. Evidence of supervisory ability

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Experience with content management system implementation


  2. Experience in an academic health sciences library


  3. Grant writing experience


  4. Record of involvement in professional associations and/or evidence of publications or presentations

SALARY:

$60,000 minimum. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and background.

BENEFITS:

Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF, The Vanguard Group, and/or Fidelity Investments) on a matching basis. Vacation is accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year. No state or local income tax.
