9:00-9:30       Welcome, introductions
9:30-10:30     Panel Presentation- Supporting Youth Resilience with Mindfulness

Kim Armstrong, Luz Iniguez, Liliana Lengua, Courtney Saben, Tai Velasquez

With increases in stress, anxiety, depression and suicide in youth, there is greater attention to providing youth with skills to support resilience, and mindfulness-based programs are growing in popularity. We will discuss the importance of supportive relationships, compassionate systems, and social-emotional skills in supporting youth resilience, and how mindfulness can enhance efforts to cultivate these. The panel will describe Be REAL, a program being implemented with UW students that integrates mindfulness with social-emotional skills, as well as Space Between’s efforts to implement mindfulness-based programs in schools. We will describe approaches to offering programs with attention to cultural diversity, experiences of trauma, and serving under-represented youth.

This panel is presented by the Center for Child & Family Well-Being

Session 1: Addressing discrimination and harassment: New education and awareness resources, led by Joel Tobin- UW Compliance Services  register for this session here

This session presents information on the new “Addressing Discrimination and Harassment at the University of Washington” video series, and will include a viewing of the brief overview on protected classes. The series includes information on free speech, and creating safe and inclusive learning and working environments, and is appropriate for all UW employees including youth program personnel.

Session 2: Engaging Youth Beyond Program Graduation, led by Kelsey Kupferer and Mary Heisey – RadioActive Youth Media register for this session here

How do you continue to engage youth who have graduated from your entry-level programs? In this interactive session, participants will brainstorm ways to 1) Build a robust alumni network, 2) Offer advanced programming to entry-level program graduates, and 3) Involve entry-level program graduates in mentorship and leadership roles. This session emphasizes the importance of youth voice at all levels of youth development programming, and the idea that both the programs and their participants benefit from keeping youth engaged after program graduation.

Session 3: Change for the Better: maximizing resources to run a high quality youth program, led by Caroline Shelton- Office for Youth Programs Development and Support, register for this session here

Operating a youth program in a University setting can be a challenge. With minimal resources- whether time, funding or both are a factor- it can be hard to make improvements from year to year and keep up with new University policies. In this session participants will have an opportunity to learn strategies for making the most of your limited time and resources to operate a high quality program. Participants will also get a jump start on planning to implement the new requirements of Administrative Policy Statement 10.13.

A detailed agenda will be available soon
