Celebrate Women’s History Month

For the past 34 years, the federal government has chosen the month of March to recognize the importance of women in American society. It began as a 7-day celebration called Women’s History Week in 1981 and became Women’s History Month by 1988. The University of Washington is bringing this national event closer to home this March with a few events you’re invited to attend.

dare to lead

The Women of Courage: Daring to Lead benefit gala is at the Sheraton on Saturday, March 7. This is the UW Women’s Center’s largest event of the year and will feature dinner, a performance by vocalist Josephine Howell, dancing, and a silent auction. Ten women will be honored for their contributions to local and global communities. More information and tickets here.

Celebrate female empowerment this weekend with Women Who Rock “Rocking Media Justice.” Events start the night of Friday, March 6 with a kick-off party at Hollow Earth Radio in the Central District and continue Saturday with a musical brigade and rally followed by the 5th annual Women Who Rock: (Un)Conference, Music, Arts & Media Festival. All events are free and open to the public, but registration is required. More info at womenwhorockcommunity.org.

guests

Guests enjoyed small bites, mingled with nominees, and heard a special guest speaker at last year’s Celebrating UW Women event.

You have until Monday, March 9 at 8 a.m. to nominate a colleague for the 11th annual Celebrating UW Women program. This is a wonderful way to honor faculty, staff, and students who go above and beyond. Celebrating UW Women is non-competitive: all nominees are honored in an online gallery and at the reception on Thursday, March 19 at 4 p.m. All three campuses are invited, and UW Tacoma has a concurrent program. I attended the Seattle event last year and loved meeting women from all over UW. Learn more here.

Seattle Pro Musica is doing a concert for International Women’s Day. All of the pieces were written by women. We’re singing at St James Cathedral on March 7th and 8th at 8PM. Many of us singing are UW employees!

KING5 did a great story recently about women in pharmacy breaking through the glass ceiling in Washington state as there are, for the first time, more licensed women pharmacists than men in the state. UW School of Pharmacy is at the heart of the story that featured our faculty and students!
