Marc Freedman is author of The Big Shift: Navigating the New Stage Beyond Midlife, which The New York Times calls “an imaginative work with the potential to affect our individual lives and our collective future.” Encore.org is building a movement to make it easier for the surging numbers of adults in the second half of life to pursue “encore careers” — paid or unpaid work that combines personal meaning and social impact. Encore.org’s internationally recognized Purpose Prize awards social innovators over age 60 for their significant work in addressing social problems.
Eric Liu teaches civic leadership as a UW Senior Lecturer in Law. Liu served as a White House speechwriter and deputy domestic policy adviser to President Clinton. Together with Nick Hanauer, Liu wrote The True Patriot and The Gardens of Democracy. His nationally-acclaimed newest book, A Chinaman’s Chance, is about being Chinese American at this moment in history. Citizen University, founded by Mr. Liu, promotes the art of powerful citizenship. Working with a national array of partners, Citizen University seeks to help Americans cultivate the values, systems knowledge, and skills of effective citizenship, based on the belief that now is the time for citizen problem-solving.
