The College of Arts & Sciences released an extensive list of honors and awards given to faculty, staff, and students. You can read the full list HERE. Several retirees were recognized:

  • Emeritus professors and UWRA members Bruce Balick, Woody Sullivan, and George Wallerstein are among five faculty from the UW Department of Astronomy to be named inaugural Fellows of the American Astronomical Society.
  • UWRA member Lynn Riddiford, professor emerita of biology, received an Achievement Award from the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology on the occasion of ICIPE’s 50th anniversary.
  • Richard G. Salomon, professor emeritus of Asian languages & literature, received the 2020 Khyentse Foundation Prize for Outstanding Buddhist Translation for his 2018 book Buddhist Literature from Ancient Gandhāra.
  • Larry Dalton, professor emeritus of chemistry, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Washington State Academy of Sciences.

Back-to-School Town Hall with President Cauce: On July 10, President Cauce and a panel of UW leaders discussed what school will look like in the fall. You can watch it or read the transcript HERE. UW Bothell and UW Tacoma also held information sessions.


Climate Change & the Puget Sound’s Marine Ecosystem Webinar: UW principal research scientist and climatologist for the state of Washington, Dr. Nick Bond, will review how Puget Sound and its marine ecosystem are likely to evolve over the coming decades, with a focus on the impacts of climate change. He will include a discussion of the kinds of efforts, both current and future, required for its protection and restoration.
