Congratulations to Professor Emeritus and UWRA member Karl Banse, School of Oceanography, newly named as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Banse was honored for his continuing work on the ecology of the plankton, the very small algae and animals that float with the currents. Banse has continued his scientific work since becoming emeritus in 1995.

Interested in making the UW a more sustainable, carbon neutral place? Please join us to form a retiree interest group, where we can learn about what green sustainable practices the University currently has, which ones need support to continue and grow, and concrete action steps to assist the UW.  At the first meeting we will talk about what practices are already in place on campus, discuss what interests or concerns the group might have and start developing a plan for this group. Discuss or get help with computers and other devices at UWRA’s Computer gathering:  Looking for advice on your not-too-old computer, on what to buy, or to ask for help for your new one? Bring your system and we’ll try to solve your problem. If your system is too bulky, bring your questions.  Date, time, location: Thursday, December 12, 2019    10:15 am – 12:15 pm, University House at Wallingford, 4400 Stone Way N. The UWRA Book Club’s next meeting will be on December 13 at 1:00pm.  This is the annual poetry meeting where each attendee chooses a poem, preferably no more than one page, reads it and discusses it with the group. UW Impact Legislative Preview: College Access, Free Tuition and Financial Aid for the Middle Class. The recently passed Workforce Education Investment Act offers free or reduced college tuition for the thousands of low- to median-income Washingtonians who qualify. UW President Ana Mari Cauce joins Rep. Drew Hansen (D-23), Microsoft government affairs director Irene Plenefisch and UW Student Regent Daniela Suarez for a discussion of this landmark legislation, moderated by Merisa Heu-Weller. OSHER Lecture: Who Put the Bomp? The Story of Doo-wop with John Jensen: Join music archivist and former Bay Area broadcaster, John Jensen, as he takes you on a lighthearted but informative musical journey to find the answer to not only who put the bomp in the bomp bah bomp bah bomp, but who the ram in the ram a lam ding dong. Through rare photos, film, and audio clips we see and hear how early close vocal group harmonizing developed into an art form that became part of mainstream rock ‘n’ roll during the 1950s and 60s.
