Retirees Building Stronger Communities

Tuesday, November 21, 2017 – Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Thought

“In the past I always thought of gratitude as a spontaneous response to the awareness of gifts received, but now I realize that gratitude can also be lived as a discipline. The discipline of gratitude is the explicit effort to acknowledge that all I am and all I have is given to me as a gift of love, a gift to be celebrated with joy.” – Henri Nouwen

Engagement Opportunities

AHH-bag-logo-4Any Hungry Husky (AHH) Food Pantry Food Drive

As we give thanks for our bounty, UW Encore would like to share a couple of ways that you can reach out to UW students and staff facing the challenge of food insecurity. Food and Funds Drive – If you’re headed to the UW Seattle campus between now and December 1 please consider bringing any of the following to the UWRA office in the basement of Gerberding Hall (Room B80): Canned foods (fruit, vegetables, chicken, tuna, salmon, soups and stews), peanut or other nut butters, shelf stable milk and dairy alternatives, cereal, pasta and grains, cooking oil and toiletries. Not planning a trip to campus (though we’d love to say “hello” to you!)? The AHH food pantry is happy to accept monetary donations HERE. Volunteer at the Pantry – One hour shifts (4-5pm set up, 5-8pm operation, and 8-9pm clean up) are still available to serve at the UW Campus Pantry on Thursday, November 30 at the Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center on the Seattle campus. You can sign up HERE (requires a Google account). Questions? Please email uwpantry@uw.edu or uwencore@uw.edu or call 206.543.4972.

Have You Got the Black Friday/Cyber Monday Blues? A good antidote may be “Giving Tuesday”. Kicking off the charitable season for the past six years on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday has partnered with non-profit organizations around the world to identify many ways that you, your family, and friends can be part of this new holiday tradition of sharing.
