Faculty, fellows and residents well-represented at 2017 AUA meeting

Congratulations to the many UW Department of Urology faculty, fellows, and residents whose abstracts were accepted for the 2017 meeting of the American Urological Association, held May 12 – 16 in Boston.
With a showing of 55 abstracts (33 posters and 21 podiums), 5 invited talks, 4 plenaries, 1 video, 3 instructional courses, 10 instructional courses, and more, the department was well-represented at the meeting.
Awarded abstracts and other recognition included:
- Urologic trauma/reconstruction fellow Paul Chung was awarded best video abstract for his video presentation on “Radial Forearm Free Flap Substitution Urethroplasty for the Treatment of a Long Urethral Defect.” In addition to Dr. Chung, presentation authors are Jonathan Wingate, Army urology resident at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, WA; Jeff Friedrich, associate professor in the Plastic Surgery Division and adjunct associate professor of Urology at UWMC; and Bryan Voelzke, associate professor of Urology at UWMC.

Johnathan Wingate, Army urology resident at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, WA, was awarded best poster in the lower urinary tract dysfunction and male urine incontinence therapy session for his poster, “Multicenter analysis of artificial urinary sphincter outcomes following radical prostate and anastomotic urethroplasty.” Bryan Voelzke, associate professor of Urology at UWMC, was senior author.

Robert Sweet, Professor of Urology at UWMC, Medical Director of the Kidney Stone Center at Northwest Hospital, and Executive Director for the WWAMI Institute for Simulation in Healthcare and Director for the Center for Research in Simulation Technologies, was selected to give the plenary Journal of Urology lecture, “Surgical Adaptation and Adoption of Skills: Staying Relevant in the Modern Age.”
- The Urology Care Foundation awarded the 2017 Distinguished Mentor Award Professor and Chair Emeritus Paul H. Lange and a resident research award to research resident Shannon Cannon, MD.
Other meeting highlights:
- Hunter Wessells, Nelson Endowed Professor and Chair of the Department of Urology, participated in Crossfire: Controversies in Urology: Grade 4 Renal Trauma Should be Managed Conservatively (video), arguing con.
- Suzette Sutherland, Director of Female Urology, a member of the UW Medicine Pelvic Health Center, and associate professor of Urology at UW School of Medicine, gave the Society of Urodynamics Point/Counterpoint talk, “Refractory Urge Incontinence – Which Comes First.”
