University Initiatives Fund (UIF)

The University Initiatives Fund (UIF) is a mechanism for reallocating University resources. Its goal is to fund innovative new programs, strategically selected to strengthen the UW and to seize opportunities that would otherwise be lost. The UIF was introduced by President McCormick in January 1996 after wide consultation with faculty and administrators. Money for the fund comes from one percent assessments on all University operating budgets in each of the next five biennia.

For a broader summary, check out the summary page.

After deliberating and consulting, the President and Provost have decided that UIF-4 will be postponed until next year when the financial situation is clear. However, we strongly encourage faculty and staff who have been designing new initiatives for the UIF to be in touch with their deans and vice presidents, and, as appropriate, with Associate Provost Debra Friedman (debraf@u.washington.edu). During this period of delay, it is important to keep apprised of transformational initiatives in case there may be alternative routes to funding.
