Within UAA, the Community College Research Initiatives (CCRI) is a research group committed to generating actionable, timely research that supports more equitable college access and completion, critically-informed student support, and improved educational pathways from access to transfer, graduation and into the workforce. Our goal is to leverage this research to effect change in postsecondary education at all levels.

CCRI has an outstanding opportunity for a temporary research scientist to join our team! This is a .80 FTE for nice months, with potential for increased FTE and extending work beyond nine months with future grants. The position has the possibility to be up to 100% remote or hybrid.

This position will work on a Rural Mentorship grant which examines mentorship opportunities for low-income students at rural community colleges across the country. The research scientist will be responsible for participating in web scraping data on mentorship programs for students from low-income backgrounds at two-year rural-serving institutions and creating a database and managing data; outreach to set-up of interviews, conduct interviews, managing and analyzing qualitative data; support the creation of a national survey and analysis; assist development and writings or presentations. Also participate in other CCRI projects.

Duties and responsibilities

Participate in web scraping of rural mentorship programs and creation of a database (25%)

Reach out to set up interviews and participate in interviews with mentorship program leads and participants and data analysis (25%)

Co-author briefs and reports that summarize major findings and author papers and presentations and other dissemination activities (20%)

Support STEM Transfer Partnership data collection and analysis, written findings, conference presentations, convenings and coaching (20%)

Contribute to other CCRI qualitative research and oversight of project deliverables (10%)

Requirements and qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s level course work in education, social sciences or related field.
  • Minimum of one year of relevant work experience in web scraping, content analysis, survey design and data analysis, and/or qualitative data collection strategies such as interviews and focus groups.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired

  • Experience creating, collecting, analyzing survey data and writing up results.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex scientific information in clear and concise language appropriate for diverse audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task and work collaboratively.
  • A doctoral degree focused on higher education.
  • Two or more years of relevant work experience in education research.
  • Knowledge and experience with web scraping, interviews, and/or national surveys.
  • Experience in both quantitative and qualitative methods.
