Networking and Communities of Practice
Location: HUB Ballroom 211
Time: 3:45 to 5:00pm

Benefits of Networking

One of the main reasons participants give for attending conferences is “for the networking.” At the TechConnect Conference you will experience informal networking. There will be no structured networking activity; instead you will have an opportunity to mingle with colleagues to explore, learn and connect. Some benefits of networking at the conference are:

  • Discover work efforts happening across campus
  • Increase visibility and awareness for you and your department
  • Learn about new tools or disciplines
  • Interact with some of the best and brightest talent

Networking Tips

Here are some great ways to make the most out of the networking event:

1. Have a few conversation starters ready. Interacting with people can seem overwhelming or intimidating when you are an introvert or just tired from a long day. Be prepared with a few questions (such as, “what did you think of the keynote speaker?” “which session provided the most value for you?” “how did you get started in your career?”). Listen intently to the answers and you are sure to learn something at this event.

2. Prepare an elevator pitch ahead of time. Be ready for the question, what do you do? A witty response that summarizes the value you add to the organization can make a lasting impression and help create relationships that will be valuable to both you and your colleague in the future.

3. Research the Communities of Practice. Learn which communities exist and see which topics you are most drawn to. You don’t have to join a community to seek out answers to questions or learn tools and resources that could help you in your own career or your work responsibilities.
