Seminar in Biological Oceanography

Lectures, discussions, and work on selected problems of current interest. Prerequisite: permission of instructor. Offered: AWSp.

Class description

This 3-credit advanced seminar course will meet Mon and Wed, 11:30-12:45, in OTB 211. We instructors, John Baross and Jody Deming, intend for the class to address many types of viruses (of Bacteria, Archaea, marine Eukarya), factors that enable and constrain their lytic versus lysogenic activity and ability to engage in horizontal gene, and implications for the origin and evolution of life. Student interests will play a strong role in the selection of specific topics addressed. Assignments will include student presentations and written evidence of scholarly reading.

General method of instruction

Two weekly meetings (TBA) that accommodate instructor and student presentations and extensive classroom discussion

Recommended preparation

Coursework in biological oceanography, microbiology, astrobiology, or permission of the instructors

Class assignments and grading

Student-led discussions and presentations, annotated bibliographies

Student-led discussion and presentation, evidence of scholarly reading, class participation
