Written report required. Prerequisite: permission of department chairperson. Offered: AWSpS.

Class description

The essential elements of designing, building, and testing of optical systems. Students will use Zemax software to design, analyze, and tolerance imaging and non imaging systems. Topics include 1st order theory, radiometry, sources, detectors, materials, lens design, fabrication, alignment, and testing.

Student learning goals

The goal of this course is for students to: understand what is required to engineer an optical system, have the skills to apply that understanding to real world requirements, and be able to interact with industry specialists when necessary.

General method of instruction

Recommended preparation

One year of college level physics and calculus for science majors.
