Studio Arts: Dance, Theater, Music, and InterArts Performance

Develops skills in a variety of studio arts in order to enhance student ability as a performer, arts creator, educator, or in applied areas of creativity. Offered: AWSp.

Class description

This course will introduce you to the fundamentals of theatre performance. You will study the concepts of character analysis, goals and obstacles, rehearsal process, staging, and performance. Improvisation, exercises, games, scene study, and monologues are some of the tools we will use to aid in your understanding of the subject.

Student learning goals

You will gain an understanding of how to approach monologues, open scenes, and scripted scenes.

Your work in improvisational theatre games and exercises will enhance your concentration, awareness, focus, analytical skills, teamwork skills, and confidence.

You will gain a basic understanding of theatrical terminology and approaches to performing and interpreting theatre.

General method of instruction

You will participate in group exercises, work with a partner in a scene, and memorize, practice, and perform a monologue suitable for an audition piece. Verbal, physical, and analytical skills will be strengthened by participating fully in class exercises, by practicing the performance of scenes with a partner, by receiving constructive criticism, by viewing and evaluating performances, and by preparing individual audition pieces.

No special preparation or background is necessary.

Class assignments and grading

Class Exercises / Games, Short Weekly Quizzes on readings, Open Scenes, Scripted Scene Analysis, Scripted Scene Performance, Independent Project Presentation, Audition Monologue, Extra Credit Project Paper optional (up to 5 points added to 100-point score)

Grading is not based on innate talent. Instead, my evaluation of your work is based on your effort/participation, progress/growth, and written/performance work. Be aware that the subject of theatre performance invites the observer (me) toward a subjective evaluation. Therefore, it is in your best interest to ensure that I am aware of your participation, growth, and work.
