The Institute for Innovation & Global Engagement (IIGE) promotes a globally engaged university through collaborations and partnerships that connect the classroom to the world. It advances the University of Washington's imperative to be boundless, and adds momentum to UW Tacoma's strategic goal to advance global learning. The IIGE offers three transcripted pathways for students: Global Honors, the Minor in Global Engagement and the Minor in Innovation and Design. The IIGE Signature focuses on: global framework, solutions orientation, inclusive innovation and community engagement.

 Program of Study: Minor: Global Engagement


Program Overview

Cultural understanding and innovative thinking are essential to navigate our complex, interdependent world. The Minor in Global Engagement offers an interdisciplinary curriculum, integrates theory with practice, and connects students to the places they are studying through its community-engaged seminars. Benefits include full Global Honors transcription.

Credential Overview

The Minor in Global Engagement offers an interdisciplinary curriculum, integrates theory with practice, and connects students to the places they are studying through its community-engaged seminars. Benefits include full Global Honors transcription. Students who may benefit are interested in: 1. Honors credentials demonstrating academic excellence, cultural competency and critical thinking skills essential for careers and graduate studies. 2. Developing career readiness and connections through executive level hybrid mentorship/internship opportunities and study abroad. 3. Building relationships with internationally reputed faculty and community leaders. 4. Funded scholarships for research in far-reaching global topics. 5. Travel abroad and cultural exchange. 6. Membership in a small cohort with critically engaged peers drawn from diverse backgrounds.

Completion Requirements

Minor in Global Engagement requirements: 25-28 credits

  • Intro: T GH 203 (5 credits) or T GH 300 (2 credits)
  • Core: 15 credits from the following: T GH 301 (5 credits), T GH 302 (5 credits), T GH 303 (5 credits)
  • Research Methodology/Capstone: 8 credits from the following: T GH 490 (2 credits), T GH 491 (1 credit), T GH 494/5/6 (5 credits)
  • Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA for courses applied toward the minor Admission Requirements

Additional Information

For students who maintain a 3.3 GPA in all UW Tacoma coursework benefits of the Minor in Global Engagement include full Global Honors credentials and transcription.

 Program of Study: Minor: Innovation and Design


Program Overview

The Minor in Innovation and Design offers a project-based, hands-on, and collaborative design curriculum. Students learn a collaborative approach to problem solving, to cultivating deep empathy, and to generating innovative ideas. Features include working on interdisciplinary teams with community and industry partners to solve real-world problems, developing a portfolio of work to share with future employers, and exploring issues of design justice to make positive changes in the world around us.
