Establishes expectations for general conduct and sanctions for violating the conduct code.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) applies to colleges and universities that receive federal funding. Among other requirements, FERPA gives students some control over the disclosure of their educational record which is broadly defined as any record that directly identifies them and is maintained by the institution or educational agency or by a party acting for the institution or educational agency.

When a student is the victim of violence, a witness to an event, or when there are concerns about a student’s potential for behaving violently, or there are concerns for a student’s health or safety questions may arise to the application of FERPA.

FERPA permits the University of Washington to disclose to appropriate parties information without the student’s consent if the disclosure is in connection with a health or safety emergency and if knowledge of the information is necessary to protect the health and safety of the student or other individuals.

The University of Washington has established a protocol with steps to follow if you believe that a disclosure of student information is necessary.

If you are concerned that FERPA may limit your ability to talk about a potentially violent, non-emergent situation involving a student, you can call 206-685-SAFE (206-685-7233) and indicate that the matter involves a student, and that you think FERPA regulations may apply. We will involve University specialists who can determine FERPA’s applicability to the situation that concerns you, and the best course of action to pursue.
