Curriculum

Our curriculum consists of two 1.5-hour trainings: the 1.0, which centers on identifying harassment and practicing bystander intervention; and the 2.0, which focuses on analyzing power structures and planning for community action.

EPIC 1.0

We discuss the severity of academia’s sexual harassment problem and parts of our current culture that enable it. Our interactive, one-and-a-half-hour online training coaches participants in identifying instances of sexual harassment and practicing bystander intervention skills (like “calling in” or “calling out”). We tailor each training with practice scenarios that reflect the needs and interests of your particular department’s ASEs and Postdocs.

EPIC 2.0

Bystander intervention is a powerful tool for combating sexual harassment. But sometimes, a community-level response can be even more effective in addressing harm and creating lasting change. In this one-and-a-half-hour training, we discuss how to build an action plan for organizing ASE and Postdoc colleagues. Participants are guided through a power analysis of critical structures that contribute to harassment, educated about past successes, and given the freedom to practice creating a concrete plan.

If you would like to schedule a department-wide training in your department, please get in touch with the team at epicprogram@uw.edu.

Note that while the union requires UW to make the training available to ASEs and Postdocs that is, departments/programs can’t refuse/disallow participation the union does not require each student to be trained. Having said that, when departments offer these trainings, this demonstrates to students that leadership is invested in addressing issues of harassment and building healthier communities.
