Selecting the correct path <strong>before starting your application<\/strong> helps avoid delays and rework.<\/p>\n<p>If you are unsure which path applies to your study, consult HSD by emailing <a href=\"mailto:hsdrely@uw.edu\">hsdrely@uw.edu<\/a> before starting.<\/p>\n<h2>Option 1: UW Reviewing for UW Only<\/h2>\n<h3>Choose this option if:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The research may be <a href=\"\/research\/hsd\/do-i-need-irb-review\/is-your-human-subjects-research-exempt-from-regulations\/\">exempt<\/a> (HSD must make this determination), <strong>and\/or<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The research involves only the University of Washington, <strong>or<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Other institutions are involved, but UW will not review on their behalf (for example, the UW IRB generally does not review for the VA).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Key points:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"\/research\/hsd\/getting-started\/#2\">Does your project require review?<\/a> Depending on the particulars of your project, you may not need to submit an IRB application.<\/li>\n<li>Most student applications use this pathway. Visit HSD&#8217;s <a href=\"\/research\/hsd\/getting-started\/#6\">Getting Started page<\/a> to learn more about additional requirements for student PIs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Next step:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"\/research\/hsd\/study-activities\/apply-for-review\/\">Apply for Review \u2013 UW Reviewing for UW Only<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Contact <a href=\"\/research\/contact-us\/?keyword=508\">the team that reviews for your department<\/a> with questions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Option 2: UW Reviewing for Other Institutions<\/h2>\n<h3>Choose this option if:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"\/research\/hsd\/training\/zipline-online-help-library\/zipline-faqs\/#sirb\">study involves multiple institutions<\/a> <strong>and<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>UW has agreed to review the activities of one or more other institutions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Key points:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>HSD must agree in advance<\/strong> to review for other institutions and establish reliance agreements<\/li>\n<li>Approval under this path does not approve all sites at once<\/li>\n<li>Each relying institution goes through a separate site review and receives a separate site approval<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Common examples:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>UW is the primary recipient of a federal award for a multi site NIH grant<\/li>\n<li>Collaborations with local partners (e.g., Seattle Children\u2019s or Fred Hutch) where UW is the primary awardee<\/li>\n<li>International studies where UW is the primary recipient of a federal award<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Next steps:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"\/research\/hsd\/study-activities\/apply-for-review-uw-reviewing-for-other-institutions\/\">Apply for Review- UW Reviewing for Other Institutions<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/research\/hsd\/irb-reliances\/single-irb\/uw-irb-as-a-single-irb\/steps-in-the-single-irb-review-process-for-initial-applications\/\">UW as the Single IRB- Initial Application Process<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Consult HSD\u2019s Reliance Team at <a href=\"mailto:hsdrely@uw.edu\">hsdrely@uw.edu<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Option 3: Non-UW IRB Reviewing<\/h2>\n<h3>Choose this option if:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The research requires IRB review <strong>and<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>UW should not serve as the reviewing IRB.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Key points:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>HSD must agree in advance<\/strong> to cede IRB review and establish reliance agreements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Common examples:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>An external IRB is designated by the sponsor<\/li>\n<li>The study is industry sponsored<\/li>\n<li>UW is participating as a relying site in a multi site study<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Next steps:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"\/research\/hsd\/study-activities\/request-authorization-non-uw-irb-reviewing\/\">Request Authorization- External IRB Reviewing<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/research\/hsd\/irb-reliances\/how-to-ask-for-a-non-uw-irb\/\">External IRB Reliance Process<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Contact HSD\u2019s Reliance Team at <a href=\"mailto:hsdrely@uw.edu\">hsdrely@uw.edu<\/a> with questions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All applications submitted in Zipline follow one of three review paths.
