July 2025 Featured Training: How to Make a Custom Base Type in SAGE Budget

ORIS has recently revised the How to Make a Custom Base Type in SAGE Budget job aid to include crosswalks for base types and object codes for both preset and custom SAGE base types.

What is a base type?

A Base Type in SAGE Budget sets the Facilities & Administrative (F&A) costs, or indirect costs, for your budget. Base Types can be customized so that F&A costs are exempted from specific object codes.

Why might you want to customize a Base Type in SAGE?

You may want to exempt some object codes from F&A costs if…

  • Your award has an outgoing subaward that needs to be excluded from University of Washington F&A.
  • Your grant type requires a Base Type that is not one of the preset Base Type options in SAGE Budget.
  • There is a small dollar amount difference between the SAGE award budget and the amount identified by the sponsor on the Notice of Award (NoA). For example, a less than $5 difference between the award budget total in SAGE Budget and the sponsor’s awarded amount can be accounted for by including the difference as a (38-00) Unallocated cost that is exempt from F&A. This use case for Base Type customization is presented in the Guidelines for a Budget Difference Between the SAGE Award Budget and the Sponsor Award job aid.
