Shipping Regulated Medical Waste – Online

This online course teaches how to prepare regulated medical waste for collection by the UW waste contractor, in accordance with the Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements. It includes hazard awareness, safety procedures, function-specific shipping preparation, and security awareness. This course does not fulfill the required training for shipping hazardous materials by land or air.

Who is required to take this training?

Faculty and staff who perform the final packaging steps of untreated regulated medical waste for collection and shipment using the UW waste contractor.

Summary of the requirement

The University of Washington is responsible for proper packaging and shipping of the regulated medical waste it generates and “ships” through a contracted sterilization company from waste generation to its final destination.
Regulated medical waste is a hazardous material. Therefore, this process is subject to Department of Transportation regulations.
