“Engagement” is a regulatory term used to describe certain types of involvement in human subjects research. When an institution’s employee or agent is “engaged” in non-exempt human subjects research, the institution is obligated by federal regulations to conduct an IRB review of the research (or to arrange for another IRB to conduct the review).
The SOP Engagement defines what an employee or agent is at the University of Washington. It also describes the procedure for determining whether an institution (such as the UW) is engaged in a research project.
The WORKSHEET on Engagement is a step-by-step tool available to anyone, to help determine an institution’s engagement
