Total Turnaround Time for New Study Applications in Zipline

Time period

November 1, 2016 – March 31, 2018 (17 months)

Total turnaround time

Calendar days from the time when the researcher clicks on the SUBMIT button in Zipline until a HSD staff person clicks on SUBMIT to send the approval or determination letter. Median is a type of average. It is the value that lies at the midpoint of the frequency distribution of turnaround times. In other words, the turnaround time for 50% of the applications was below the median, and turnaround time for 50% of the applications was above the median.

Comparative paper data

From the one year prior to implementation of Zipline.

Turnaround Time: On whose desk?

The IRB review process usually involves some “back and forth” between the research team and HSD/the IRB. Total turnaround time is the combination of:

1. The amount of time an application is on HSD’s of the IRB’s “desk” (for example, while a review letter is being written), PLUS
2. The amount of time an application is on the researcher’s “desk” (for example, while the researcher is preparing a response to the IRB’s review letter).
