Training Options to Meet Requirements

Protection of Human Research Subjects (PHRS) Training

On-line Options

  1. CITI Web-based Training – UW Affiliation

    Basic Course

The CITI Web-Based Training meets the requirements of NIH and most other sponsors for training in the Protection of Human Research Subjects.

You will select one of the following “Basic” course options:

    • Biomedical Course (3-5 hours)

Researchers and research staff (including faculty, staff, and students) who are engaged, primarily or exclusively, in research in the Biomedical Sciences.

    • Social/Behavioral Course (3-5 hours)

Researchers and research staff (including faculty, staff, and students) who are engaged, primarily or exclusively, in research in the Social and/or Behavioral Sciences.

    • Biomedical & Social/Behavioral Course (4-6 hours)

Researchers and research staff (including faculty, staff, and students) who are engaged in research that involves both Biomedical and Social and/or Behavioral approaches.

    Renewal/Refresher

The UW does not currently require the completion of a “Basic” course. However, should completion of a basic course be needed due to requirements from the research sponsor or another institution, you can do so via the CITI Program Website & Training.

    Student Course (30-45 minutes)

The Student Course does not meet the NIH/UW training requirement. It is intended for students participating in classroom projects, but who are not conducting their own research as a principal investigator (i.e., the research is not part of a Master’s or Doctoral thesis and the student is not staff on an externally-funded research project).

Completion Verifcation & Report for CITI

CITI training completions are automatically reported to HSD when users register as UW affiliated. Completions are uploaded to the HSD website, Verification & Report page, each Monday from the preceding week (Mon-Sun). If a name or other information does not appear correctly in the Training Verification & Report, please send the correct information to hsdtrain@uw.edu.

  2. CITI Web-based Training – Non-UW Affiliation

Most CITI Web-Based Training meets the NIH and UW requirements for training in the Protection of Human Research Subjects. Other sponsors of research, such as the Department of Defense (DoD) components or Veterans Affairs (VA), may have their own requirements that exceed those of the NIH and UW.

Completion Verifcation & Report for CITI

If CITI training is completed under affiliation with another institution or organization, upon completion of the course, save the Completion Report/Record in electronic format or print a copy and send it to hsdtrain@uw.edu or by fax to 206-543-9218 to the attention of HSD Training. Confirmation will be provided that the completion meets NIH and UW requirements and it will be posted to the HSD website, Verification & Report page.

  3. NIH Web-based Course

The NIH Web-Based Training meets the NIH and UW requirements for training in the Protection of Human Research Subjects.

Completion Verifcation & Report for NIH Course

NIH training completions are not reported to HSD. Upon completion of the course, save the Certificate of Completion in electronic format or print a copy and send it to hsdtrain@uw.edu or by fax to 206-543-9218 to the attention of HSD Training. Confirmation will be provided that the completion meets NIH and UW requirements and it will be posted to the HSD website, Verification & Report page.

In-Person Options

  1. UW – Project/Program Facilitated

In some cases, projects or programs have unique training needs and wish to conduct the training on the Protection of Human Research Subjects themselves in order to meet the “basic” requirement or a “refresher/renewal requirement.” To request that such training be recognized by HSD as meeting NIH or other sponsor requirements, send an email to hsdtrain@uw.edu with information about the group and why the project/program wishes to conduct its own training. Attach to the email an agenda for the training and any training materials that will be used.

Completion Verification & Report for UW – Project/Program Facilitated Sessions

The project or program staff should provide a list of those individuals who completed the approved training; including full name, affiliation (with the program or project or other institution), and completion date for the training, to hsdtrain@uw.edu. Completions will be posted to the HSD website, Verification & Report page, for all who attend the training in its entirety.

  2. FHCRC & Seattle Children's – Basic & Refresher Lectures

Basic and Refresher training conducted at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) and Seattle Children's meets the NIH and UW requirements for training in the Protection of Human Research Subjects.

Completion Verification & Report to UW for FHCRC Training

Individuals who complete training at FHCRC should send an email to hsdtrain@uw.edu; providing your name and affiliation and that PHRS training was completed at FHCRC. Completions will be posted to the HSD website Verification & Report page.
