COVID Related Restrictions on Human Subjects Research

No Change

There are currently no changes to human subjects research requirements or limitations because of the higher contagiousness of the coronavirus Omicron variant and the ongoing surge in COVID infections. However, the situation is being closely monitored and changes may be made with little notice.

Current Requirements include:

  1. Masking. All study participants and research team members who will have
in-person interactions must wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status. HSD strongly encourages researchers to have a supply of high-quality masks (e.g., N95, KN95, KF94) to provide to study participants, as needed during in-person interactions.
  2. Physical distancing (6 feet or more). If any study team members or study participants are not vaccinated, they must observe distancing when indoors and (when within a 6-foot distance from others) outdoors. All individuals are encouraged to distance if in a crowded setting or in areas that are not well-ventilated.
  3. Local Site Restrictions. Researchers and study participants must abide by any restrictions imposed where the in-person research activities will occur (e.g., institutional or facility requirements, local government, or public health agency). This includes research conducted in international settings.

Check the HSD COVID webpage for more details, including some exceptions to the above requirements and answers to frequently asked questions.
