Dear Colleagues,

Thank you for agreeing to serve on the search advisory committee to actively recruit and recommend candidates for the position of Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. This search may involve both internal and external candidates. Sean Sullivan, Dean of the School of Pharmacy, and Ed Taylor, Dean and Vice Provost for Undergraduate Academic Affairs, will co-chair the committee. As you can see, the committee is composed of outstanding individuals from across the institution with a range of expertise. We seek a distinguished academic and a visionary leader for the College of Arts and Sciences who will work well with the UW community, including other academic units, public and non-profit partners, alumni, and donors.

Enclosed is a copy of Executive Order 20 from the University Policy Directory, which sets forth the basic procedures for conducting a search for a dean. Also enclosed is a copy of a general job description for deans of academic units. The University has a strong commitment to diversity, which I ask you to consider seriously as you recruit a pool of candidates. Please establish protocols for seeking the opinions and nominations from the broader UW faculty, student, and staff communities, as well as appropriate constituencies outside the University of Washington. At the conclusion of the search, the President and I would like to receive from you the unranked names of 2 to 3 highly qualified candidates.

We will be in touch soon to schedule your first committee meeting and I will attend a portion of the meeting to discuss my priorities and expectations for the position and the search. At this meeting we will also seek your input on a draft position announcement. We are engaging a professional search firm to assist you in this search, which we will announce soon.

Thank you very much for accepting this important assignment.

Sincerely,

Mark A. Richards
Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs
Professor, Earth and Space Sciences
