ArtSci Roundup: Lux Aeterna, Faculty Trio: Beethoven Piano Trios, Part 3, and More

Unpacking Form and Function: Ceramics

Join Associate Curator of Collections Dr. Ann Poulson and expert Professor of History Benjamin Schmidt as they take a close look at some fine examples of the design and decorative arts in the Henry Art Gallery’s permanent collection. Professor Schmidt will present works of their choice from the collection, examining them from his unique perspective. A question and answer session and casual discussion, in which everyone is invited to participate, will follow.

Through August 28 | Jacob Lawrence Gallery

The Jacob Lawrence Gallery + Northwest Film Forum proudly present Lux Aeterna, an exhibition featuring 16 local, national, and international artists working in a wide variety of media to explore the mutability of media made and consumed using ever-evolving platforms.

This exhibition considers how technological, economic, and cultural forces shape the ways we produce, share, and experience media — and how that media in turn influences our aesthetics and values. In tracing the currents of technical migration and image circulation, the exhibition raises timely questions about ownership and fidelity. It experiments with media as a tool for empowerment at a time of existential uncertainty. And it wonders whether media, like light, might outlast humanity, forever sending forth a message.

Will Rawls: Everlasting Stranger Performance

August 7, 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM | Henry Art Gallery

In Everlasting Stranger, New York-based choreographer and writer Will Rawls (b. 1978, Boston, MA) activates relationships between language, dance, and image through the fragmentary medium of stop-motion animation. In his installation, time and movement slow as a live, automated camera photographs the frame-by-frame actions of four dancers. While the performers occupy the labor of becoming images, visual capture is staged as an obsessive process that is constant yet compromised by the movement it aims to fix. Here, as in previous works, Rawls develops strategies of evasion and engagement within systems that mediate, distort, and abstract the body.

Faculty Trio: Beethoven Piano Trios, Part 3

Online

Faculty colleagues Craig Sheppard, piano; Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir, cello; and Rachel Lee Priday, violin, conclude their three-concert performance of the complete cycle of Beethoven piano trios. The performance, live-streamed from the University of Washington’s Meany Hall, is followed by a brief question-and-answer session.
