ArtSci Roundup: Queer Imagination, Cruisin’ Around Washington, and More

During this time of uncertainty and isolation, find solace in digital opportunities to connect, share, and engage. Each week, we will share upcoming events that bring the UW, and the greater community, together online.

Many of these online opportunities are streamed through Zoom. All UW faculty, staff, and students have access to Zoom Pro via UW-IT

A Conversation with Tiffany Dufu

June 9, 3:00 – 4:00 PM | Online

Join the UW Alumni Association in conversation with Tiffany Dufu, ’96, author of “Drop the Ball: Achieving More by Doing Less” and founder of The Cru where she helps women meet their goals and face life’s challenges. Learn more about how her philosophy has helped guide her work through a global health crisis and renewed national focus on racial justice.

Queer Imagination

June 3 – July 8 | Jacob Lawrence Gallery

The Jacob Lawrence Gallery proudly presents Queer Imagination, a group exhibition curated by Brittney Frantece, recipient of the gallery’s 2021 Curatorial Fellowship for BIPOC Graduate Students. Queer Imagination asks, how can creative works distort material realities and build a world that explores new ways of being, thinking, and knowing?

The exhibition features works by Portland-based set designer August Oaks and four University of Washington artists and scholars: writer and English graduate student Rasheena Fountain, poet Nanya Jhingran, who graduated in 2019 with an MA in English, photographer Berette S Macaulay, and illustrator and painter Meshell Sturgis. Together they offer insights into a world governed by violent logic and contemplate ways to radically warp, shift, redesign, or altogether burn that world to the ground.

Cruisin’ Around Washington

Through October 31 | Burke Museum

This bite-sized exhibit takes you on a tour around Washington state as fossils come to life through the art of scientific surrealist Ray Troll. Peculiar-looking fish, gigantic fearsome salmon, and one very unlucky rhino all make an appearance. Utilizing brand new art, as well as old favorites, we are thrilled to be able to offer this compact extension of Troll’s work complete with specimens from Burke collections.

MFA + MDes Thesis Exhibition
Through June 27 | Online

Each year, the Henry Art Gallery presents the University of Washington’s School of Art + Art History + Design Master of Fine Arts and Master of Design thesis exhibition. Throughout their programs, fine arts and design students work with advisers and other artists to develop advanced techniques, expand concepts, discuss critical issues, and emerge with a vision and direction for their own work. The 2021 presentation of this exhibition will include work by both 2020 and 2021 graduating students.
