The University of Washington again placed fourth among U.S. higher education institutions, according to the NTU Rankings released Tuesday.

The UW trails only Harvard, Stanford and Johns Hopkins among U.S. institutions in the NTU Ranking, compiled by National Taiwan University, and also known as the “Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities.” Known as the HEEACT Ranking from 2007-2010, the program offers annual performance rankings of universities around the world based on their production and impact of scientific papers.

“We are proud to be recognized for the incredible impact and excellent quality of the research produced here at the University of Washington,” said UW President Ana Mari Cauce. “This ranking is a testament to the UW faculty, staff and students whose work is changing  our understanding of the world, finding new cures, advancing countless industries and even transforming our relationship to the cosmos.”

The list provides overall rankings, as well as rankings by six fields and by 14 selected subjects. The UW is No. 4 in the United States, No. 7 in the world and in the top 10 in the following subjects and fields:

  • 2 — Subject: Microbiology
  • 4 — Subject: Immunology
  • 4 — Subject: Geoscience
  • 7 — Subject: Clinical medicine
  • 5 — Subject: Social sciences, general
  • 8 — Field: Medicine
  • 7 — Field: Social sciences

The NTU Ranking is a reliable ranking for universities like the UW that are devoted to scientific research. The ranking is entirely based on scientific papers, reflecting scientific performance from three perspectives on research — productivity, impact and excellence.
