UW marching band says thank you to Grant County after Thanksgiving bus accident

UW News

The Husky Marching Band returned to central Washington on Sunday to say thank you to the Grant County community after a bus crash there last Thanksgiving.

Hundreds of people filled the Quincy High School gymnasium for an hour-long thank you event that included heartfelt speeches, band performances and culminated with a community cookout.

One of the Husky Marching Band and Spirit Squad buses rolled off Interstate 90 near the small town of George on the way to Pullman for the Apple Cup in November 2018. Injured students filled local hospitals and a warming shelter was improvised at the George Elementary School.

“Community members answered the call to make the night a little less scary for our students,” UW President Ana Mari Cauce said at the gathering. “Some of you left in the middle of your Thanksgiving dinner, surrounded by family, and came out to offer parts of your Thanksgiving dinner to our students. You also offered blankets, but most importantly you gave them comfort. You showed them what it means to be a human.

“On behalf of the University of Washington and all the families and friends of our students who know and appreciate what you did, I’m here to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”

Husky Marching Band Director Brad McDavid acknowledged many of the first responders who provided help that dark night in November.

“It’s really our chance to see all those people who came to our assistance that night and look them right in the eye and give them a hug, and sincerely thank them for all they did for us that night,” McDavid said.
