16 UW students awarded Fulbright fellowships

Sixteen UW students and alumni were awarded Fulbright U.S. Student Program scholarships for the 2019-20 academic year, and one has been named an alternate, joining about 1,900 students and recent graduates from around the country to study and teach abroad this coming year.

The scholarship program is the largest U.S. international exchange opportunity for students to pursue graduate study, advanced research and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide.

Fourteen UW undergraduate students or recent alumni are among this year’s Fulbright Student Program winners and will travel to countries such as India, Chile and Kosovo to take part in research and teaching assistantships for the academic year. Two graduate-level students will travel to Brazil and Mauritius.

2019-2020 undergraduate/bachelor’s level Fulbright students are:

  • Azelle Bahadory, senior, International Studies major: Fulbright Teaching Assistant to India
  • Hana Bloedel, senior (Bothell) Society, Ethics & Human Behavior major: English Teaching Assistant to Estonia
  • Rachel Fricke, senior, Aquatic & Fishery Sciences, Environmental Studies majors: Fulbright Research Grant to Germany
  • Hannah Hampson, ’18, Civil Engineering major: Fulbright Research Grant to Chile
  • Lauren Hanna, ’18, Public Health major, Fulbright Research Grant to Kosovo
  • Kevin Lam, senior, Dance, International Studies majors: Fulbright Teaching Assistant to Taiwan
  • Sarah Leibson, senior, International Studies; Korean majors: Fulbright Teaching Assistant to Taiwan
  • Brandie Nordstrum, ’14, Anthropology major: Fulbright Teaching Assistant to Vietnam
  • Anika Patel,’17, Biochemistry major: Fulbright Teaching Assistant to Thailand
  • Nola Peshkin, senior, English major: Fulbright Teaching Assistant to Belgium
  • Thomas Pham, senior, International Studies major: Fulbright Teaching Assistant to Turkey
  • Rodha Sheikh, senior, Law, Societies & Justice major: Fulbright Teaching Assistant to Malaysia
  • Maya Sullivan, senior, Economics, International Studies majors: Fulbright Research Grant to Oman
  • Binh Truong, senior, International Studies major: Fulbright Research Grant to Austria

This year’s graduate-level awardees are:

  • Joyce Maria Nimocks, Master of Social Work ’18: Fulbright Research Grant to Brazil
  • Padraic Casserly, Technology Innovation (Global Innovation Exchange): Fulbright Research Grant to Mauritius

UW Graduate Student/Alumni Alternates:

  • Lily Dittrich, Social Work: Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Spain.
