Lou Cariello named vice president for UW Facilities

Lou Cariello has been named vice president of UW Facilities, University of Washington Executive Vice President Jeff Scott announced earlier this month. Cariello is scheduled to start in mid-August.

Cariello joins the UW from Kaiser Permanente Washington, where he led the company’s Facilities Services Delivery Team. He oversaw the execution of a multi-billion-dollar capital development plan to accommodate the company’s rapid growth in Seattle and across the state.

Cariello retired as a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy after a distinguished 30-year career leading facilities and engineering organizations in the United States, Europe, Southwest Asia and the Pacific. Among his accomplishments, Cariello supervised facilities management of the Navy’s institutions of higher education, research laboratories and medical facilities, including oversight of a comprehensive master plan for the Walter Reed National Naval Medical Center, formerly known as Bethesda Naval Hospital. The culmination of his naval career was as commander of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Atlantic in Norfolk, Virginia. Of note, Cariello was the 2005 recipient of the Navy League’s John Paul Jones Award for Inspirational Leadership.

Cariello graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering. He earned master’s degrees in both mechanical engineering and engineering management from Drexel University and attended the Executive Management Program at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business.
