COVID-19 Response & Resources

Hello Jumpstart community,

We hope you are all healthy and safe during these difficult times. As we inch closer to the start of Fall quarter, we have been working hard with our preschool partners, Community Engagement & Leadership Education (CELE) Center, and our Jumpstart National network to create multiple plans around safe and meaningful programming for our young scholars.

In the Spring, we were able to quickly create an emergency programming system, which included Live Storytime/Activities with Jumpstart Seattle for preschoolers, weekly member-led Zoom meetings and workshops, workshops on how to create your own children’s book, a virtual annual Jumpstart Pageant, and a virtual End of Year party. This upcoming year, Jumpstart will be virtual for the entire Fall quarter and we will reassess what programming will look like in the Winter. We are committed to providing a meaningful year for our preschoolers, their families and teachers, and our Jumpstart members. We will continue to center the needs of our most vulnerable, center racial equity in all of our decisions, and to provide transparent communication with our communities.

We hope to send education packets once a quarter to support distance learning. We will work with your preschool center on what the best way to get these to you would be. Our goal is to send them out in December, March, and June. In previous years we have requested families fill out paper consent forms to help us track which students we will be serving, request photo/video consent, and consent to join our Ready4K early learning tips and activities texting program. We do not know what this will look like this year, but we will do our best to communicate this as soon as this is figured out. Jumpstart has created At-Home Learning resources here. Please email Sala at salas@uw.edu if you have any questions, concerns, or thoughts on how we can best serve your child.

Preschool partners

Managers would like to meet with all previous partners before August 21st to discuss what this upcoming year can look like. We will take your lead in how Jumpstart can best support the children and families your centers serve. We have met with several of our partners so far and each have expressed some interest and understandable hesitation. We have created a menu of options, which can be modified to fit the needs of each classroom. You can find emails sent this summer here.

We will have a virtual Fall quarter (onboarding, training, and sending recorded activities and introductions to families). We will start Sessions on January 4th and do not know what this will look like until November/early December. It may look like virtual sessions or a hybrid, which will involve a lot of safety precautions and limiting of persons and time in the classroom. All 2020-2021 team members can join our Facebook group here for updates and to meet your fellow team members!

We thank you all for your patience, understanding and full support as we navigate these new and challenging times. We hope you all are taking good care of yourselves and each other. We are all in this together. Please feel free to email Sala at salas@uw.edu if you have any questions. We wish you all well and hope you are staying healthy and safe.

With gratitude,

Jumpstart Seattle at University of Washington
