Meet our new Site Manager, Adanech!

Welcome to Adanech Makey, our new Associate Site Manager!

Meet her

My name is Adanech Makey and I am the Jumpstart Associate Site Manager at the University of Washington. I am originally from Awassa, Ethiopia, and was raised in the greater-Seattle area for the majority of my childhood. I received my Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Community Development at THE illustrious Howard University in Washington, DC. Attending a Historically Black College/University (HBCU) reinforced my mission to alleviate disparities within education through advocacy for universal access to quality education for marginalized communities in the U.S. and abroad. I have volunteered and taught in various schools located around the world including Seattle, WA; Flint, MI; Washington, DC; São Paulo, Brazil; St. Thomas, VI; and most recently, Meki, Ethiopia. During my time at Howard University, I was able to nurture my interest in education policy through my internship at the Alliance for Excellent Education, where I served as the Policy and Advocacy intern. I further pursued my interests in education and labor rights as the International Affairs intern at the American Federation of Teachers. In my free time, I love to volunteer with children, laugh, cook, and work with non-profit organizations such as the NAACP and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to support work in racial equity and immigrants within our community. I am excited to work with my colleagues, UW students, and community leaders to inform and improve educational practices, and to support our teachers, early learners, and our community through Jumpstart at the University of Washington.

Associate Site Manager role:

Her role as the ASM will involve supporting the Senior Site Manager with the day-to-day operations of the Jumpstart program at the University of Washington in order to ensure that Jumpstart Quality Standards and guidelines provided by Jumpstart are met and that the program meets Corporation for National Service (Americorps) grant requirements. She will work in conjunction with Jumpstart’s national staff and Senior Site Manager to implement the Jumpstart program model. She will assist in the recruitment, training and support of 80 undergraduate college students serving as part-time AmeriCorps members to work with preschool children during the academic year.
