UW SkyDrive Pro and Nebula

Beginning October 9, 2013, Microsoft’s Cloud Storage offering (UW SkyDrive Pro) and its collaboration tool (UW Lync) is available to all University faculty, staff, and students.  For more details, go to:

To install:

If you have already installed Microsoft Office 2013 (available from Run Advertised Programs) you already have SkyDrive Pro and Lync 2013.  

If you don't have Microsoft Office 2013, you can install SkyDrive Pro and Lync 2013 separately from Run Advertised Programs.  We also suggest you install the SkyDrive Pro Sync 

Installing Lync

  1. Locate Microsoft Lync 2013 in Control Panel > Get Programs/Run Advertised Programs
  2. Double click to launch the installer.
  3. Accept the UW License agreement, the installation will proceed.
  4. Accept the Microsoft agreement, then click Install.
  5. Once the install is complete, click Close
  6. Locate Lync in your Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office 2013 folder or on your Win8 Start screen

Running Lync

  • The first time you start Lync you will be prompted for some settings; select Use Recommended Settings and click Accept
  • If you log into your computer with your NETID account, all you will need to do is enter your email address, such as: uwnetid@uw.edu and Lync will automatically sign you in.
  • If you use your NEBULA2 account to log into your computer, enter your email address, such as: uwnetid@uw.edu and when prompted, enter your UW NetID password (save password is recommended for convenience).

Installing SkyDrive Pro

  1. Locate Microsoft SkyDrive Pro 2013 in Control Panel > Get Programs/Run Advertised Programs
  2. Double click to launch the installer.
  3. You will be prompted to Accept the MS Agreement terms, click Install
  4. Once the install is complete, Click Close
  5. You may be prompted to restart
  6. Locate SkyDrive Pro in your Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office 2013 folder or on your Win8 Start screen

Running SkyDrive Pro 

  • The first time you start SkyDrive Pro you will be prompted for some settings; select Use Recommended Settings and click Accept.
  • If you are prompted for your file location use:  https://uwnetid-my.sharepoint.com/personal/Your-UW-NetID-here_uw_edu/Documents/
  • Note: replace Your-UW-NetID-here with your actual UW NetID in lowercase. 

Please note:

  • Backups:  Microsoft does not provide individual file restores for your files the way that Nebula's Snapshots service does for files stored on your H: and I: drive.   Critical files stores in SkyDrive Pro may need to be backed up in another location.
  • H: and I: drives:  There is no connection between SkyDrive Pro and Nebula's H: and I: drives, although you can transfer files between the two locations.
  • Support:  This is a campus-wide offering, and not Nebula-specific.  The folks at help@uw.edu can provide basic assistance in using SkyDrive Pro, its Office-syncing capabilities, the video conferencing and instant messaging of Lync, or backing up SkyDrive Pro files.  Additional support is available as part of Nebula's consulting services.
  • Major reasons to use SkyDrive Pro:
    • HIPAA- and FERPA-protected data is permitted.
    • You can easily share files with non-Nebula UW people.
  • You will be able to install Lync and the Office 2010 Synch program from the Run Advertised Programs application. The Office 2010 Synch program will integrate SkyDrive Pro with your Office 2010 applications; support for SkyDrive Pro is built into Office 2013 (also available from Run Advertised Programs).
