UW hosted Microsoft’s “Imagine Cup 2014 World Finals” student technology competition, which drew 125 high school and college students from over 30 countries the week of July 28, the first time the 11-year event was held at a university. Teams stayed in UW Seattle’s residence halls and used Microsoft hardware and software to develop entries in Games, Innovation, and World Citizenship on the theme “imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems.” Read about the Imagine Cup 2014 winners. Join faculty members for five-minute “enLightning” talks about transforming courses from traditional to hybrid or online. Technology Teaching Fellows from Chemistry, Philosophy, Geology, Education, American Indian Studies, and the College of the Environment will describe some of the techniques they used to alter their courses at the talk, on May 13 from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in Odegaard Library, room 220. The one-day UW TechConnect conference on March 25 attracted 400 people to Odegaard Undergraduate Library & Learning Commons for informative talks and workshops including Flipping the Classroom, Office 365, IT Service Management, Tableau data visualization, and Enterprise Architecture strategy. Tweets reflected the enthusiasm: “Really neat to see all the incredible efforts and projects rolling out” and “A great forum for exchanging information and ideas.” The UW Computing Directors sponsored the event with UW-IT. UW employees interested in learning more about Agile and Lean principles and how to deliver value sooner to meet business needs can register for upcoming Agile Fridays Webinars, a free training series sponsored by the Washington State Office of the Chief Information Officer and Results Washington. UW-IT staff will present “Lean/Agile Basics and Essentials” on April 18, and “Lean/Agile Transition Case Study” on May 16. The Webinars are open to all state employees and held from 11:00 a.m. – noon.

UW Event Calendar owners can now manage editing permissions for departmental calendars on their own, rather than submitting a request to UW-IT, thanks to a recent integration of the calendar with the UW Groups service. Calendar owners now can add or remove editors from departmental calendars simply by adding or removing their NetIDs from groups managed through the UW Groups service.

A new University-wide Enterprise Architecture (EA) initiative kicked-off in January to address the challenges of merging new technologies into the UW’s complex and dynamic environment. EA provides the structure and processes to ensure technology solutions are well-designed, cost-efficient and scalable, and meet UW strategic needs. UW-IT’s new Director of Enterprise Architecture & Strategy, Jim Phelps, will work with UW’s business and IT stakeholders to align business strategies and technology projects with each other and UW strategic directions.
