My Husky Experience has been about growing as an individual and discovering who I want to be as a person, but in a way that continues to reinforce the ideals and values that I have already established. One of the biggest challenges for me has been balancing all aspects of my life – mom, wife, veteran and student. My experiences with the Husky Vets club, ASUW Senate, WiSE, and many other programs have allowed me to help my peers, and give meaning to my time at the UW.

    Year awarded 2016

I am Brian Tracey. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Over the last couple of years, as the socioeconomic war on Black America became more public and visceral, I naturally gravitated toward the only outlet on campus that I saw for myself, the Black Student Union. As I continue my work in the University to deconstruct discrimination and inequity at micro levels, my ability to work together with allies has strengthened our efforts and forged many strong bonds with individuals and groups outside of my own.

The incredible faculty who mentored me as an undergraduate student in Psychology and Spanish also inspired my ongoing commitment to an inclusive community, both on and off campus. As a master’s student in Social Work and Public Health, I have worked to increase equity for students with disabilities and survivors of sexual violence. My Husky Experience would not be what it is without mentorship from more faculty and the privilege to mentor others. I know that I will return to the UW as a lifelong learner because this is my home!

Originally from Singapore, I’ve spent many growing-up years in Thailand with the Lahu Hill tribe, and Zacatecas, México. Because of my experiences from such distinct communities, I am excited and driven by boundaries of new partnerships. Together with youth, teachers, and communities, we build counter-hegemonic educational change. Through alter/native practices focused on human relationships, resurgence, and liberation, we reimagine marginalized spaces as sites of possibility and strength.

I am a single working mother who made the decision to go to college later in life. Despite my struggles, I have made a decision that I will do everything in my power to be an example of what is possible through unflinching determination, not just with words but with my actions. With every thing I do I have to decide, “Will this be helpful in teaching my children and others?” And, if I falter, I can still provide others with valuable knowledge, even if it means teaching them, “Don’t make my mistakes.”

As co-founder and president of the student group Women in Chemical Sciences (WCS) at the UW, I’ve gone beyond my role as a chemistry graduate student and researcher to explore the culture and context of science. With WCS, I’ve helped start conversations about diversity and build community around our shared experiences as graduate students. We provide resources for everyone in our department, inspire the community through outreach, and empower students to get involved and make a difference.

My time at the UW has been devoted to supporting the wellness of others. While in the College of Education, I have developed a Resilience Framework designed to foster the experience of resilience and help others be their best. Through teaching and consultation, I have promoted the experience of resilience among early learning educators, collegiate coaches in the Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership Program, international students, and student-athlete and non-student-athlete populations — striving to lift those at the UW and beyond.

I entered the UW as a low-income, first generation, Filipino-American from West Seattle — an area whose reputation was more known for low-academic achievement as opposed to being culturally diverse. Despite these adversities, I have used my Husky Experience to immerse myself within communities across and beyond campus that pushed me to never settle. I strived to be part of the Husky 100 because I wanted to show individuals like myself that they can overcome barriers and reach their full potential.

Community has been the watchword throughout my experience at the University of Washington. As a graduate student researching next-generation solar cell materials I have shared my work with a broader community of policy makers and future scientists through outreach. As a founding member of Women in Chemical Sciences at the UW, I have helped build a community of support for increasing the participation of women in STEM. Through these leadership roles, I have transformed my passions into actions.

For believing in the strength and potential of the UW community to move forward and be boundless, I have worked to bring a meaningful change to our community, no matter how small it might seem, through various channels. These include the Graduate and Professional Student Senate, the Provost’s Advisory Committee for Students, Faculty Council on Multicultural Affairs/Faculty Council on Women in Academia, and the Department of English diversity committee, as well as working as a graduate student instructor, and sharing my understanding and experience as an international student and a woman of color with those who hold similar positions to mine.
