At the UW, I am pursuing a Ph.D. focusing on the effects of climate change and pollutants such as heavy metals and microplastics on the health and reproduction of reef-building corals. My work growing and studying corals across the Hawaiian Islands has helped us understand which trace metals found in corals are likely micronutrients with important roles in protecting the corals from climate events such as heat waves, while isolating other metals as contaminants from coastal pollution. Through fieldwork, teaching and undergraduate mentorship, my UW experience has shaped me into a better scientist, leader and collaborator in our efforts to predict and curb the effects of climate change on coral reef ecosystems.

During my time at UW Tacoma, I’ve thrived in leadership roles, from founding organizations like ECHO Dance and the B.E.T.T.E.R. Education Club to advocating for students as a senator in ASUWT and promoting career resources to support student success. My journey doesn’t end there — while I work to support students on campus, I also bring that same passion and advocacy into the classrooms I teach in. Moving forward, I’m excited to continue my journey in education, shaping the next generation of learners and driving positive change. I am, and will always be, boundless.

As a first-generation student and daughter of two Salvadoran immigrants, it was imperative that I would take advantage of the resources the UW was able to give me due to educational inequities my parents faced in El Salvador. With the support of my family, friends and mentors I was able to grow within a supportive community, which meant pursuing my passion of teaching and supporting students who come from similar backgrounds as me. At the end of the day, my heart will always be around seeking educational justice for students and communities of color who aspire to reach their dreams like I was able to.

Beyond my academic achievements, through the UW I found various opportunities across the country to be part of a team that valued my skills and made me feel a part of something bigger, and I knew I wanted to continue chasing that feeling. Growing up in Barbados and by extension the West Indies region, one of the defining ideologies of my upbringing was recognizing the power in fostering community. My time at the UW has been shaped by dedication to student advocacy, student leadership and service within the communities I wish to see thrive on campus. My Husky Experience has empowered me to think critically to overcome challenges; to cultivate meaningful connections for underrepresented populations through student organizations like the Black Graduate Student Association and the Evans International Student Association; and has prepared me for a career in global affairs and policymaking, committed to the service of others and advancing meaningful change.

As a veteran, my journey at UW has been about transforming adversity into purpose.  Finding strength in community and continuing my service through traumatic brain injury research that supports fellow veterans, athletes, and all who suffer a TBI. With the help of mentors and a network of support, I’ve turned barriers into advocacy, making engineering more inclusive for students with disabilities. My research isn’t just academic, it’s personal, and a promise to uplift others through science, service, and shared strength.

From listening to the stories of those struggling with addiction in the clinic and local community to researching its neuronal mechanisms in the lab, the UW has laid the foundation for me to learn, explore and contribute to the realm of addiction neuroscience. These diverse experiences have allowed me to view addiction through both a medical and scientific lens, offering a unique perspective that fuels my passion and reinforces the type of impact I wish to have on the field. Upon graduating, I hope to pursue an M.D./Ph.D. where I can combine the skills of a researcher with the empathy and clinical insights of a physician, because I firmly believe that the most meaningful progress in addressing substance use disorders lies at the intersection of rigorous research and compassionate care.

Weeks before starting the UW Master of Social Work program, Dr. Caleb Banta-Green asked me to design and lead the inaugural Washington State Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) Perceptions and Community Health (PerCH) Survey, examining overdose risk, tenants’ views on substance use policies and their power in policy implementation. This survey validated and complicated the nuanced realities of PSH that I had seen for years as a frontline worker in community mental health outreach; as I look to the future, I see myself advocating for structural innovations in supportive housing and long-term care systems, whether in community-engaged research, program evaluation or direct service. I am dedicating this award to my dearest friends in recovery, my dearest friends who use drugs and my dearest friends who are no longer with us: I love you.

As an immigrant who grew up in a rural province in the Philippines, the disparity and inequity of access to dental care I experienced firsthand fueled my desire to utilize opportunities and resources presented to me as a Husky dental student to engage in community service for underrepresented populations, navigate ambiguity through research, and challenge brilliant minds through teaching and mentorship. I aspire to continue to provide dental care to medically complex patients and manage oral manifestations of systemic diseases as an oral medicine specialist. My lifelong objectives are clear: to provide high-quality customized care to my patients, to work on improving access to oral health care to marginalized populations, to be at the forefront of research in oral care, to relentlessly maintain the same compassion throughout the years, and to build lasting camaraderie with people whose goals align with mine.

Before becoming a Husky, I lived in a haze of uncertainty, constantly measuring myself against societal ideals. But UW Bothell gave me space to rediscover my voice and reignite my purpose. As a first-generation student, I transformed my hardships into advocacy — designing a culturally responsive psychology textbook and championing Black student empowerment through the Black Student Union. These experiences cemented my commitment to challenging traditional academic norms, fostering inclusive mental health spaces and advocating for marginalized communities. The lessons I’ve learned at the UW have shaped my leadership, resilience and dedication to social justice — values I will carry forward as I create meaningful change.
