Real Dawgs Give Back (SPEP)
To provide leadership opportunities and educate students about the impact of philanthropy at UW.
Real Dawgs Give Back! The Student Philanthropy Education Program (SPEP) gives students an in-depth look at fundraising operations at the University of Washington and allows for a better understanding of the role philanthropy plays at the University. The program helps students communicate the goals, purpose and impact of UW Advancement while allowing them the opportunity to educate other students about the importance of giving back.
“My gratitude towards the opportunity to attend the University of Washington has inspired me to interact with my peers to nurture a more holistic perspective towards the value of quality higher education. This is why I joined the Student Philanthropy Education Program.”
Mourya Mamidala, 2014-2015 Chair, Class of 2015
“Being a part of the Student Philanthropy Education Program has been a transformative experience. It has changed the way I think about my community, public service and higher education. There are few things that are as empowering and liberating as a college education and the battle to expand college accessibility is a cause worthy of our attention. I think that SPEP is at the center of that struggle. By helping to create a culture of giving back, in whatever form that may take, SPEP members are at the frontlines of the fight for higher education. That’s why I am proud to be a part of SPEP. ”
Rutger Ceballos, 2012-2014 Chair, Class of 2014
SPEP’s council consists of a group of highly motivated students interested in the promotion of philanthropic awareness on campus. Students who serve on the council receive training in event planning, project management, fundraising, strategic planning and marketing. Internship credit is available. SPEP members serve as ambassadors to students, alumni and friends of the University of Washington.
If you are interested in joining SPEP as a general council member or as part of the leadership team, see the application below.

As students, we don’t often consider ourselves philanthropists, but we still understand the impact of giving on our college experience. We strive to give back to the University and the community with our time through volunteering, education and community outreach. This year SPEP will be holding multiple quarterly and monthly volunteer and community-service events. Make sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook to get the most up-to-date information on volunteer opportunities.
Philanthropy Day– November 15, 2016
Our fall kickoff coincides with the nationally recognized Philanthropy Day held in November. Look out for the SPEP tent in Red Square as we give out prizes and connect with the student body about philanthropy on campus. You’ll love our fun swag! Check out our 2016 event–we asked students “How Do You Give Back?” Video produced by our Chair, Joycie Yu.
SPEP Networking Night– January 31, 2017
SPEP hosts an annual event for UW students to make connections with professionals in the Seattle area. We invite students and SPEP Young Alumni to attend to educate and inspire students. Our goal is for the SPEP community to last beyond graduation.
Real Dawgs Day- May 17, 2017, Red Square
Our spring event is a celebration of our students and supporters! We partner with other campus teams to create a fun and educational environment where students can interact, recognize service and leadership, and engage with other students and staff to learn about UW funding and scholarship support. To volunteer, contact Elaine Carpenter.
SPEP Playing Cards
SPEP is constantly thinking of fun and innovative ways to spread philanthropic awareness around the UW community. We recently launched SPEP playing cards, each card of has a philanthropic fact about the University that seeks to educate about the impact of giving on campus.
