NORTHEAST

A commonly held belief is that everything east of the Cascade Mountains in Washington is flat. The Northeast region disproves that notion with the help of three mountain ranges, the Okanogan, Kettle River and Selkirk, which are considered the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

The area, which includes the 1.1 million-acre Colville National Forest, attracts outdoor enthusiasts year round for long-distance hiking, snowshoeing and more.

The Colville, Kalispel and Spokane tribes call this region home. The Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation comprises 12 aboriginal tribes with 1.4 million acres of land. The Colville Tribal Federal Corporation generates more than $120 million per year in revenue, making it an economic leader in the region.

A handful of UW researchers live in Okanogan County’s Methow Valley and offer their expertise to home and land owners there to help prevent damaging wildfires.
