DO-IT Hosts Workshops on Making Science Accessible

Date
Wednesday, August 23, 2006

Are you a teacher interested in making science accessible to all students, including students with disabilities? Full inclusion of students with disabilities in science involves both accommodation strategies for specific students and universal design of instruction that enhances learning for all students.

Educators who join one of DO-IT's one-day capacity building institutes this fall will network with other teachers and learn strategies to increase the successful participation of students with disabilities in science. Institute participants will take part in hands-on science experiences and leave with useful instructional tools and resources. The Institutes are most appropriate for K-12 mathematics, science, and special education teachers and administrators; college undergraduate science, technology, and mathematics instructors; and postsecondary faculty who teach teacher in-service/pre-service courses.

The Institutes will be held in conjunction with the following conferences:

Washington Science Teachers Association/Washington Organization for Reading Development Joint Conference "Linking Science and Literacy"
October 12-14, 2006
Spokane, WA
wsta.wildapricot.org/
The WSTA AccessSTEM Capacity-Building Institute will occur on 10/12.

Oregon Science Teachers Association Annual Conference "Science on the Wild Side"
October 13, 2006
Roseburg, OR
oregonscience.org/
The OSTA AccessSTEM Capacity-Building Institute will occur on 10/14

The Institutes are free of charge but space is limited so sign up today. For accepted participants, DO-IT's AccessSTEM project will cover the registration fee for the WSTA/OSTA general conference for those who wish to attend. Teachers in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington can also apply for funds from the AccessSTEM regional alliance to cover travel and one-night hotel expenses.
