Summer Study 2020 - Tuesday, July 21

Tuesday, July 21, 2020 - 10:00 to 11:30

Phase 1:

Making the Most out of Makerspaces: Scholars will learn about "Makerspaces," where tools and materials are made available for students to create and build all kinds of things from art projects to engineering devices. Representatives from the University of Washington will talk about how Makerspaces are used, why they are important, and even offer some helpful tips for "making" the most out of these cool new hangout spaces. UW Student Makerspace staff will give us a tour of The Mill and show off the laser cutter in action.

Tuesday, July 21, 2020 - 10:00 to 11:30

Phase 2:

Let's Impress! Presenting Yourself Online: Scholars will learn about presenting themselves well during online meetings. During the session, Scholars will hear from Dr. Burgstahler about her experiences related to online meetings, and share their own thoughts about looking professional and interacting in ways that impress others.

Scholars will address the following questions:

  • What is one idea you have about presenting yourself well as a student in an online college class?
  • What image do you want to project to your professor? Would you present yourself differently for different types of meetings? For example, a student work group,  a social gathering with friends, a family reunion, etc.
  • What are particular things to avoid?
  • What are considerations if you were giving a presentation in class?
Tuesday, July 21, 2020 - 13:30 to 15:00

Phase 1:

Advocating for Universal Design of Online Learning: Scholars will learn all about Universal Design (UD) and explore examples of strategies to make online learning more engaging and accessible for everyone. Scholars will share their own experience of going online at school, and share their thoughts about the "20 tips" video or publication. Students will learn how they can constructively advocate for themselves at school, to help make classes more accessible and inclusive for everyone.

Tuesday, July 21, 2020 - 13:30 to 15:00

Phase 2:

Developing Your Phase 2 Project: Scholars will work together with Mentors and staff to develop ideas for their Phase 2 project. They will learn about past projects, talk about their interests, discuss how other projects such as their senior year project might be incorporated, and begin to develop a timeline for their project.
