Phase I Scholars

Seventeen Phase I Scholars attended their first DO-IT Summer Study session at the University of Washington in July 2013. They learned about college life and prepared for college and careers. Throughout the year, they communicate with each other, DO-IT participants, and DO-IT Mentors. They use the Internet to support their academic studies, and they complete projects in exciting fields that include science, engineering, mathematics, technology, and business. After completing Summer Study 2013, these participants graduated to Phase II.

Hi, my name is Antonio. I enjoy studying Latin and writing. I have cerebral palsy, which has affected my mobility. I hope to graduate from high school with First Honors, which requires a 3.7 GPA or higher. I enjoy sports, especially baseball, football, and basketball. I am the manager for my high school basketball team. I would enjoy a career in sports broadcasting or journalism. I plan to attend college. My top choices are University of Washington, University of Southern California, and Stanford University.

Hi, my name is Dustine, and I have Asperger's syndrome. I attend Roosevelt High School in Seattle as a junior. I play flute with the Roosevelt Symphonic Band and with the marching band. I would like to study either law or computer science. I enjoy sports, particularly the Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Sounders FC. I also bowl competitively in leagues and tournaments. After completing high school, I hope to attend the University of Washington.

Hi, my name is Michael. I attend Henry M. Jackson High School in Mill Creek. I am a senior. I enjoy computer programming in Visual Basic and would like to become a programmer analyst. I enjoy taking photos of nature, reading, building plastic models, and playing racquetball. I have autism, which gives me a learning disability. My greatest accomplishments are being accepted into DO-IT, getting a C+ in Spanish 2, and making honor roll.

Hi, my name is Courtney. I'm going into my junior year at Olympic High. I just moved to Washington this past summer and love almost everything about it so far. I have a visual impairment, but I also have a very supportive family. Listening to music is possibly my favorite pastime; I'm doing it almost constantly. I also like to play music; my primary instrument being the flute, which I play in the symphonic band at school. I'm also an avid reader. I will read most anything, but I tend to linger in the sci-fi/fantasy realm. That's just a bit about me; I can't wait to get to know all of your lovely personalities.

Hi, my name is McKenna, and I have arthrogryposis. I am from Arlington and attend Lakewood High School. Some of my favorite classes include forensics and comparative government. After I graduate high school, I plan on becoming a resident athlete at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. My goal is to compete in the 2016 Paralympics for air rifle shooting and then continue on to college.

Hi, my name is Ryan, and I have Asperger's syndrome. I attend Shadle Park High School in Spokane. I hope to get a degree in mathematics with a focus on engineering of some sort. I enjoy designing and building complicated machinery in Minecraft.

Hi, my name is Ellen, and I have a speech-based learning disability. I live in Seattle and will be a senior at Aviation High School this coming school year. I am interested in pursuing a career in either aeronautical science (professional pilot) or mechanical engineering. Last summer, I was an intern for the Blue Angels when they came to Boeing Field. This summer, I was the lead intern (even though the Blue Angels are not coming) for another flight team. Also, I went to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) camp. I love to play soccer; I've been playing soccer for over eleven years. I foster kittens at my home for the Seattle Humane Society. When I get the chance, I like to fly airplanes; I actually flew a Cessna twice as the main pilot.

Hi, my name is Clarissa, and I have cerebral palsy and left-sided hemiplegia. I live in Everett and attend Kamiak High School. I like learning foreign languages; I'm currently learning Japanese. I also enjoy singing and listening to music. In the future I'd like to travel to Japan and other places around the world.

Hi, my name is Brenna, and I have a learning disability. I will be a junior at Port Townsend High School in Port Townsend. I was the youngest filmmaker in the Port Townsend Film Festival. I am on a mountain bike team and enjoy photography and sports.

Hi, my name is Rahil, and I have Duchenne muscular dystrophy. I will be a junior at Bothell High School next year. I am a member of the National Honor Society. I am interested in science and technology, though not sure which specific field I want to pursue. I enjoy reading books and playing computer games. I like to play car-racing and simulation games like Sim City. I also play Age of Empires III. Some of my favorite series of books are the Warriors series by Erin Hunter and The Legend of Drizzt by R.A. Salvatore.

I participated in a Reel Grrls workshop called Dis This! where my group made a short video about disability awareness.

Hi, my name is Hannah. I will be a junior next year at Skyline High School. I enjoy the sciences and humanities. In my free time, I like to read and enjoy the outdoors, especially during the summer. I also play the flute in my school band. I love to volunteer around the community, and to write. My friend and I started a writers' club at my school. I am also currently in the National Honor Society.

Hi, my name is Kayla, and I live in Lynnwood and attend both Mountlake Terrace High School and Edmonds Community College through Running Start. I am interested in math, English and science. I hope to go to law school to pursue a career in disability law. I swim for the U.S. Paralympic National Swim Team, and I hold a world record in the Fifty-Meter Butterfly. In August, I participated in the Paralympic World Championships in Montreal, in Quebec, Canada.
