Phase I Scholars

Seventeen Phase I Scholars attended their first DO-IT Summer Study session at the University of Washington in July 2012. They learned about college life and prepared for college and careers. Throughout the year, they communicate with each other, DO-IT participants, and DO-IT Mentors. They use the Internet to support their academic studies, and they complete projects in exciting fields that include science, engineering, mathematics, technology, and business. After completing Summer Study 2012, these participants graduated to Phase II.

Hi, I am Mikayla, and I will be a junior at Lynnwood High School. My favorite class is sports medicine. I participate in my high school's robotics team, and we competed in the First Robotics Competition. This year we were in the national competition in St. Louis. My goals are to attend the University of Washington and become a pediatrician. I have a learning disability, dyslexia, and ADD.

Hi, my name is Hannah, and I am legally blind in my right eye. I will be a junior at Arlington High School. My favorite subject is history. I would like to be a physical therapist. I enjoy playing basketball and soccer, as well as shopping. I also love spending time with my friends and my family. This summer I went to Hawaii!

Hi, my name is Peter, and I have autism. I will be a junior at Redmond High School where I enjoy studying environmental science and math. At school, I am a member of the Environmental Club and Math Team. I would like to have a career in environmental science and would definitely want to do something related to math. During the summer I like to play softball. I am a funny guy with a positive attitude and a global perspective.

Hi, I am Jennifer, and I have spastic cerebral palsy. My favorite classes are history and English. I am involved in my high school's Knowledge Bowl. I would like to work in the field of broadcasting and communications. I enjoy making slide shows of famous people; you can view them on YouTube under the user name "accustomcycle." I also like reading, creative writing, and technology.

Hi, I'm Aaliyah. I am deaf and wear a cochlear implant to help me hear. Next year I will be a senior at Edmonds Woodway High School. My favorite class is history. I don't know what I want to do for a career yet, but I know I would like to work with kids. I play softball and am a member of the Monroe High School Bearcats, a bowling team. I plan to attend Edmonds Community College and transfer to a four year college. I love dogs, especially my Eskimo husky named American. I also competed in the Miss Teen Washington Pageant and won "Most Spirited" award.

Hi, my name is Lucas, and I have Goldenhar's syndrome and a hearing impairment. I will be a sophomore at Sammamish High School and enjoy math. I would like to attend the University of Washington or University of California Los Angeles. My goal is to go into the medical field, specifically to be an anesthesiologist. I ski, wake board, and participate on my high school's soccer and golf teams.

Hi, my name is Cody, and I have cerebral palsy. I will be a junior at Gig Harbor High School and my favorite classes are history and science. I'm not completely sure what I want to do for my career, but I would want it to be in the area of technology. I enjoy spending time on the computer and playing games. I also like playing power soccer, which I have been doing since 2006.

Hello, my name is Lindsay and I have Asperger's syndrome and attention deficit disorder. I will be a senior at Skyline High School and my favorite class is environmental systems. When I grow up I would like to be an environmental scientist or a writer or both. I would like to attend a liberal arts college and major in environmental science or creative writing. In my spare time I read anything I can get my hands on and enjoying drawing.

Hi, I am Eric, and I will be a senior at Cascade High School. My favorite classes are journalism and French. I would like to become a pastry chef. I enjoy running track, skateboarding, snowboarding, and speed skating. I have dyslexia.

Hi, my name is Alex, and I will be a junior at Kingston High School. My favorite classes include American Sign Language, English, and history. I have a passion for acting. I take acting classes and am a part of many productions. My favorite kind of character to be is one with a huge range of emotions. When I grow up I would like to be an interpreter or an actor. I'm not completely sure where I want to go to college yet, but I may want to attend the New York Film Academy. I have cerebral palsy.

I volunteer at the office of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. I have spinal muscular atrophy and love archery and painting with acrylics.

Hi, my name is Dominique, and I will be a senior at Mount Si High School. I am a member of the student relations board at my school's Associated Student Body. My favorite classes are English and art, and I would like to be an animator for Disney. I love to draw, shop, play games, and be with my family. Hi, my name is Allison, and I am a senior at Sedro-Woolley High School. I love studying architecture, interior design, and graphic design. I would like to continue these studies in college. I play tennis, swim, draw, craft, and go to the shooting range. I have a unique skill of putting both socks on with my feet. I have thrombocytopenia absent radius syndrome and Von Willebrand disease.

Hi, my name is Alicia, and I am deaf. I will be a junior at Edmonds Woodway High School. My favorite classes are math and science. I would like to become an ER doctor. I am a volunteer at Children's Hospital, doing office work and running errands, but I want to eventually work with kids directly. I also am a member of the Deaf Academic Bowl and have competed on a national level. I would like to attend the University of Washington for pre-med and then attend Johns Hopkins University for graduate school.

When I grow up, I want to be a politician and involved in creating laws. I work at the Pacific Science Center in the Discovery Corps Program. I enjoy following politics, hanging out with friends, and boating. I have arthrogryposis.

Hi, I'm Grace. I am deaf and will be a junior at Edmonds Woodway High School. My favorite classes are math, science, and English. I am interested in attending the University of Washington, Rochester Institute of Technology, Stanford University, University of Southern California, or University of California Los Angeles. I don't know what I want my career to be yet. I love to dance tap, jazz, hip hop, and other styles. I teach dance to kids, and I am a volunteer at my church and food banks. I am also member of the National Honor Society and my school's Deaf Academic Bowl team.
