Position description:

At St. James Immigrant Assistance our mission is to build an inclusive society and that includes you!  Our non-sectarian ministry to immigrants and refugees reaches across King County providing English Language and Citizenship Preparation classes and one-to-one tutoring,  Elder Integration, and Legal Services pertaining to immigration.  In direct service, volunteers share essential skills and knowledge and gain rich, cross-cultural experience and understanding.  With newly acquired information and tools, immigrants and refugees in turn contribute to and enrich our communities.


Citizenship Instructors lead a small group of students (not more than 10) through the exciting process of preparing to become US Citizens. With materials and support provided, volunteer instructors assist students in learning US history and civics, English language conversation, reading and writing.


Time commitment:

Volunteers make a six-month commitment to meet with their students weekly for 1.5 hours. Some preparation, travel and reporting time should also be expected.


Skill requirements:

Volunteer instructors must have experience teaching ESL to adults or carry a certificate or degree in teaching English as a Second (or as a Foreign) Language. Fluency in English is also required.
