Position title:

Peer Advocate

Name of organization:

Peace for the Streets by Kids from the Streets

Position description:

Peace for the Streets by Kids from the Streets is a resource center and shelter for homeless youth, located on Capitol Hill.  We operate on a low barrier philosophy of participation, by which anyone is welcome to access services, regardless of race, gender, orientation, etc.  Roughly half of our population identify as LGBTQ, a distinction we celebrate within the greater community of service providers.  We are also the only shelter in the city to allow pets.

Our HYPE drop in center operates as a community resource point, where participants can receive a meal, socialize, shower, do laundry, exchange supplies, and sign up for extended services.  (GED classes, case management, mental health assessments.)

Position:  We need volunteers to operate the HYPE center, serving meals, facilitating laundry and showers, and to simply hang out.  Simple conversation is one of the greatest services you can offer, and can be rewarding for both parties involved.  If you are at all interested in working in Social Services, this is a great opportunity to become acquainted with the populations we serve.
