Public service opportunity: Solar Power Project

Position title:

Solar Power Project

Name of organization:

Green Life Volunteers

Position description:

Are you interested in Solar Energy? Would you like to learn how to install Solar Panels and at the same time do something great for a small rural community in Costa Rica? Then the ‘Solar Panel’ Workshop is great for you.

The goal of the ‘Solar Panel’ Workshop is to provide renewable electric power in rural communities in Osa Peninsula, where it would otherwise be absent. This reduces overall carbon emissions by offering solar as a viable alternative to running a generator or burning tires, or simply having to pay high electrical bills (especially for public buildings who are non-profit this is a very important financial factor). The workshop provides the materials and solar panels, and install them free of charge for the community. You as a participant will gain an understanding of the basic engineering principles of photovoltaic power. The resulting panels are then put to work, making power in the local community. You will also help to educate the community about renewable energies.

Time commitment:

two weeks

Skill requirements:

An ideal volunteer on this project has a passion for environmental conservation, renewable energy, and helping communities.  The Solar Power Projects starts on the 18th of June 2016 and ends on the 1st of July 2016. You will be spending time with local Costa Ricans – who may not speak English that well – but the coordinator and the teacher on site speak English. If you would like to improve your Spanish before the project begins, you can sign up for group or private Spanish classes!
