Public service opportunity: Volunteer Tutor for Kids K-6

Position title:

Volunteer Tutor for Kids K-6

Name of organization:

Urban Impact

Position description:

Urban Impact partners with families and communities in Rainier Valley to break the cycles of social, material, and spiritual poverty. In partnership with Mercy Housing, Urban Impact built Emerald City Commons (ECC) – an affordable housing unit that houses many refugee and immigrant families. The Out of School Time (OST) Program is an after school kids tutoring program for families living in ECC.

We are in high need of volunteer tutors!  Starting March 7th, we will be doing tutoring and homework from 3:30 – 5:30 pm Mondays – Thursdays. We hope for tutors to come once a week (though certainly welcome to come for more); the time counts toward community service hours. With such a wide age range, we hope to provide as much one on one attention as we can, to keep education an empowering resource for our kids!

Time commitment:

2 – 8 hrs/wk

Skill requirements:

We are looking for tutors who are…

(1) Passionate about working with Kids.

(2) Respectful and sensitive to ethnic and cultural diversity.

(3) Creative, flexible and kind.

(4) Able to learn K-6 math and literacy material quickly, enough to successfully support kids through homework.

Start date:

March 7th

End date:

June 2nd

Emerald City Commons, 7728 Rainier Ave S, Seattle 98118

How to apply:

Please email Nicole Gehlbach, the Coordinator for the OST Program, to ask more questions and/or to start volunteering. Many thanks!!
