Position description:

Literacy Source is excited to offer a yearlong position for an AmeriCorps VISTA candidate starting in February 2016. This new position will fulfill two roles:

Community Engagement: This position will develop and implement a comprehensive targeted outreach program throughout Seattle to increase the number of volunteers recruited and trained as one on one tutors.

Student Success: This position will also create a new Student Success Support Program to help low-income adult students’ gain the basic literacy skills needed to secure or maintain employment and transition to a more hopeful future


Literacy Source has provided adult literacy services in Seattle and King County since 1986. Our mission is to build a literate community and promote self-sufficiency by providing learner-centered instruction adults in English literacy and basic life skills. We offer free classes, tutoring and learning resources for low-income adults who want to improve their basic reading, writing, math and computer skills; learn English; study for a high school diploma or GED; or prepare to become citizens.

This AmeriCorps VISTA project will directly impact our ability to provide and increase services and instruction to hundreds of low-income learners each year through the Community Engagement and Student Success Program. The impact on the community as well as our program will be significant.

This VISTA position is funded through AmeriCorps/United Way King County. Members must be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents, and must be at least 18 years of age at the start date of their service.

Time commitment:

40 hours a week – 1 year


Skill requirements:

  • Interest working in a non-profit or public agency with volunteers and clients of diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated competence in interpersonal relationships, group facilitation and presentations.
  • Ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks in a busy office environment.
  • Able to use initiative, assume personal responsibility and take on a leadership role.
  • Strong computer and organizational skills.  Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Access.
  • Willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and occasional weekends.
  • Ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks in a busy office environment.
  • Tutor

End date:

mid February 2017



Feb ’16  – April ’16 : Fremont.  After April: Lake City
